Smith Prodigy Review

Smith Prodigy Review

The Smith Prodigy has been around for a few years now. A solid medium/large fitting goggle with a variety of lens options as well as a “hop up kit.” That’s right a “Hop Up Kit!” This is some tech stuff. Alright back to the review.

What are some things that I am looking for in a pair of goggles? Besides the crucial item called fit, goggles can be reviewed for lens options, style, fog prevention, and price. Most good goggles today will run you around $60 to $150.

I’ve been riding with the Smith Prodigy Goggle for 3 seasons now. I love the fit and the unobstructed vision you get through these goggles. The medium/large fit is great if you don’t have a helmet that has a snug fit or isn’t a Smith brand helmet. I’ve ridden with a Giro Bad Lieutenant for a number of years. The Prodigy fit well.

Smith offers a plethora of lens choices for the Prodigy. From the Sensor Mirror lens to the Red Mirror, you’ve got a few choices. I prefer the Sensor Mirror lens for the storm days as well as cloudy dark days. If I was to pick one lens to rule them all, I would probably go with the Ignitor lens. It’s a little light for those Spring Sun days, but if you only want one pair of goggles, go with the Ignitor lens. Of course I recommend you have at least 2 pair of goggles in your car or pack, with more at home. Just keep stocking up when you find a deal.

The Smith Prodigy Goggle have an aggressive style. Kind of like a rattle snake or reptile head of some sort. I like how they look.

On storm days you are often skiing a little slower around the mountain and that can lead to some fogginess in the goggle. I have never had these fog up on me. Not even during touring.

The Smith Prodigy Goggle sells for around $100 at most retailers. Check out Ebay, TGR and Craigs List for deals on the Prodigy. I see them selling for around $50 with shipping quite often.

Over all, I love the Prodigy. It’s a great google with a solid style, good fit and excellent lens options. The price for a new pair can be kind of high, but if you are diligent, finding a pair for $50 makes these goggles a steal!

Praxis Mtn Jibs, Freeride’s & Ascension Skins Make for EPIC Backcountry Laps

Praxis Mtn Jibs, Freeride’s & Ascension Skins Make for EPIC Backcountry Laps

So late last May I got some Mountain Jib skis from Keith at Praxis Skis. I liked the sound of these skis the first time I heard about them. A little springy, fat, recurve and more made them a great softer snow ski for the way I like flowing down the mountain. Pow is what I hike for generally, so these were gonna be a good match for me. I got the 188’s.

Trading up from a pair of Gun Lab 188’s I have had since a year before they hit the market, it was time. I had a nice set up with the Guns, BC Access Low Fat skins, and Fritschi Freerides. The setup worked good. My one complaint was the skins. They just are not as good as the BD Ascension skins in glide or climb. I had the clip fix back in the day for some Pocket Rockets that worked great to get up to the kickers. Then I was exposed to the Spatula and only BC Access was making skins fat enough for those bad boys.

The Praxis Mtn Jibs are less stiff than the Gun Labs, but about the same weight. More of a full flexing ski rather than in the tip and tail. Rocker too will set this ski apart the most. I think recurve is a key element to skis for the backcountry. You can ski way more variable conditions much easier with tip recurve.

Last night I got the skins cut and ready for the first bc tour I can jump on. Should be soon with the winter storm warning coming tomorrow. Enjoy the pictures.

Hybrid Skis Help Ski Pow and Eases the Pow Groomer Transition

Hybrid Skis Help Ski Pow and Eases the Pow Groomer Transition

Since Shane McConkey made the Spatula a mainstream ski at Squaw Valley, there have been tons of rocker  reverse sidecut skis sprouting throughout the ski industry.

Now I am a man of the multi-ski quiver since there is no specific ski for all conditions. There just isn’t. You need a different ride for the different conditions. You need at least 2 pair, 3 or 4 is better. Personally, I love the full rocker ski on a powder day and even corn days, it’s just super fun to slarve around the mountain. However, not everyone is me!

Hybrid skis are trying to cut this quiver number down by at least 1 giving you a ski that has the properties of the full rocker ski as well as some sidecut and camber under the binding in order to better the transition from the pow pow to the hardpack on your way back to the lift. Some of the best Hybrid skis out on the market are listed below…

Praxis “The Protest” – 132/137/130/131/124Buy these Praxis Protest Skis! USA MADE!

From the Truckee based Praxis Ski Company comes “The Protest.” I think this might have been one of the first, if not the first, hybrid style skis to hit the market. Having skiers like Drew Tabke kill it on these boards says one thing, they’re EPIC! Keith at Praxis says: “There is an almost unnoticeable transition from the reverse sidecut tip and tail to the subtle sidecut underfoot.”

K2 Pontoon – 160/130/120Buy these K2 Pontoon Skis! Shane McConkey!

For this year K2 has made a tribute ski for Shane. I haven’t heard a negative thing about the Pontoon. It won’t make you ski like Shane, but you’ll love the ride. Shane said: “There’s something really cool about getting scared. I don’t know what.”

Armada JJ – 126/136/115/133/121 - Buy these Armada JJ Skis! EL NINO!

With EPIC skiers like JP Auclair and Julien Regnier designing these boards, how can you go wrong? You know they work. Armada says: “With rocker at the tip and tails, camber under foot, and strategically located width, the JJ floats like a yacht in deep snow and carves like a three-fin thruster to the lift line.”

Rossignol’s S7  BC – 145/115/123 – Buy a Pair of Rossignol S7 BC Now! Winter is Near!

I like the graphic on these skis. Super smooth. They look like fun for sure. Sage kills it on these, if you buy a pair, you will look like Sage. Rossignol says: “The S7’s features Rossignol Amptek profile combining, early raise tip and tail, camber underfoot, reverse sidecut in the tip and tail and sidecut underfoot.”

There is an almost unnoticeable transition from the reverse sidecut tip and tail to the subtle sidecut underfoot.

These skis are just a sampling of what the ski world is beginning to see. Ski longer without the burn, if you get it, buy some Hybrids. Got a ski to add or a comment on the article? Leave it below!

Race for Tara Mountain Biking Event

Race for Tara Mountain Biking Event

There are few things for me during the summer that really get my heart racing.   Mt. Biking just so happens to be the one that works for me every-time, without fail.  I figure if you can’t scare yourself flying down dirt, inches past rocks and trees then you are doing something wrong.

I gained a new respect for the downhill mountain biking world last weekend during their “Race for Tara” event. The race was being held to support Tara Llanes, a pro level downhill racer who was tragically paralyzed during a race in 2007. It brought together a great turnout of the bike industry including many of the sports top names to raise funds for Tara’s expenseive rehabilitation.

Now I hadn’t visited Northstar in a few years, but I remembered the transition from skiing to biking looking like all they had done to change seasons was to start loading bikes onto the lifts. Now the transformation is unbelievable, jumps everywhere, wallrides on every banked corner, log bridges over obstacles.   Just an amazing amount of trail mantanice and upkeep that has started to make this place look really serious about their biking season. I don’t know how many times I will be skiing at Northstar this winter, but I want to be here everyday next SUMMER if I can.

Paddleboard Lake Tahoe

Paddleboard Lake Tahoe

I’m not saying I wish I hadn’t gone, but my last SUP paddle was a bit of a frigid challenge.     It would be my last shirtless Paddleboard session of the summer and I guess I choose to ignore the fact that the temperature changes drastically when the sun goes down.    In fact I didn’t even leave until around 3:30pm, so you would think I would have realzied wearing my wetsuit booties at the very least would be sensible for a trip out on the lake in October.

Out for only 15mins, my body heat still chilled I contemplated scapping the paddle for the warmth of my car several times and accepting that I was indeed underdressed.    In relative question of my own desision, I pressed on thinking as long as the sun is in the air I can make it to my destination about an hour’s paddle away.    Reaching the goal beach with totally numb feet I gratefully scramlbed into the lone public restroom and stuck my toes into the hot water the sink provided.

With warm feet and the wind at my back I ventured out on my return trip to find the sun chasing my every stroke.      Bit by bit I gained on it though and my trip back to the bay I call home was no longer the only thing on my mind.    The lake and my surrounding choked me with beauty.      This I thought, is really cool and in fact a grand desision in the end.

Since buying a standup paddleboard I have been paddling much more than I thought I would given my lack of free time in the summer, but Tahoe I have come to realize is a perfect venue for distance paddleing.    Kayaking to me is a bit boring for the legs, and it pales in efficency to the paddleboards swiftness.      The paddleboard not only offers you panoramic views of the lake from a birds eye perspective, but it is a perfect core workout for our favorite winter sports.

If you have not yet cruised Tahoe on a SUP, you might just be missing the best activity the lake has to offer.     Check it out as soon as you can and preferably when the weather is friendly!

Protect Your Bean! New Helmets for 2009 / 2010 Winter

Protect Your Bean! New Helmets for 2009 / 2010 Winter

Now that there are tons of rad looking helmets to help improve your steeze out on the market, you should be riding with one. Snowboarder, Skier or Saucer Boy (R.I.P.) it’s all the same. A helmet will help prevent brain injuries due to falling down cliff faces, hitting trees, catching edges or missing the transition on the Bollywood Booter in the park. Check out some of my favorites below and add a comment with something that I missed and why you dig on it.

K2 Rant

K2 Rant

The K2 Rant is the coolest looking freeride helmet K2 makes. Most of their gear seems oriented towards a different crowd, but the Rant fits right in on a deep day at Kirkwood or Alpine Meadows. Wear the helmet over you beanie or put the pads in and where it without. The low profile fit is a sweet skate / bmx style. Shane McConkey represented this helmet.

Smith D2 Troy Lee Full Face Helmet

Smith Troy Lee Full Face Helmet

Smith Optics has been on the Helmet scene for a few years now. Some of the best goggles on the market now have a helmet that fits right along with them. The most EPIC helmet that Smith offers is the Smith X Troy Lee Designs D2 Full Face. The D2 features flow-through ventilation, an interchangeable & washable padded liner, bag and a fit kit. The helmet retails for $295, which is steep, but you gotta pay for EPICness.

Maze Smith Helmet Audio

Maze Smith Helmet Audio

Smith also offers some nice audio helmets. I love having some bumping reggae running through my helmet as I schralp the gnar and slash every fresh pow turn possible. The Maze Audio Helmet is a stylee addition to this years Smith lineup.

Bern Watts Helmet

Bern Watts Helmet

Bern came out with the Bern Baker a couple years back, setting the standard for lower profile brimmed helmets. They did it right. The Baker has the style for both Big Mountain and Park riders. Bern also offers an audio set up for their helmets, but I hear it’s junk. The Bern Watts is a better choice than the Baker. The main reason is the venting. Your head holds a lot of heat. Especially when you stick that chairline 40 footer. So go with the Watts and enjoy a little cooling as you rip into the lift line.

Giro Shiv Audio Helmet

Giro Shiv Audio Helmet

The Giro Shiv Audio is a sweet low profile audio helmet and Giro’s audio is good. The Shiv offers Super Cool Vents and the Fit Kit Pad System to dial in the helmet to your bean.

POC Tanner Hall Pro Model Helmet

POC Tanner Hall Pro Model Helmet

Tanner Hall has recently signed with POC. The Tanner Hall Pro Modelis the Receptor BUG helmet. The patented system with double overlapping shells lets air in and heat out and protects from sharp objects. Ventilation can be closed for cold days. An advanced outer shell makes for a tough and durable construction and provides excellent protection with help from the in-mold liner in polycarbonate and EPS. Tanner is sick, and if you have this helmet you will be more like him.

There are many, many helmets out on the market. The best thing to do is to grab your goggles and go down to your local ski or board shop and try them all on. Every helmet fits differently. Some of the brim helmets fit to low for small foreheads, while large foreheads will gain gaper gap. Take your time, spend your money wisely. Your mom will love you for it.
