Well, well, well! It’s been cold huh?! With that last little storm that brought about 3 feet of snow to the higher elevations and even a foot or so in Reno, everyone was getting excited. Tonight starts the winter storm watch, which I hope turns into a warning, that is going to spread the love much deeper. It’s looking promising for sure! NOAA is calling for around 4 feet of snow by Monday. I’m skiing pow for sure!
I am a little worried about stability through this next system. This snow on the ground right now is extremely sugary anywhere in the north or eastern slopes. This is no good when it comes to bonding layers for reduction in avalanches. The Sierra Avalanche Center says that they have seen about 5 to 8 inches of settle in the snowpack. However, there is still the threat of human triggered avalanches due to that weak layer exists. Alaska has had a crazy weak layer around the 5 foot deep area. Similar here after this storm if we don’t get a little warming.
You can keep updated on the Avalanche conditions by simply checking in with the Sierra Avalanche Center online before you head out. Enjoy the coming weather!
